- In 2005 Richard had 1500ha sown down to
flairdale Lucerne.
He cuts hay and silage when ever the opportunity allows it.
For example, this year with an early start,
Richard was able to cut 600 rolls in the first week of May.
- Richard sows into cereal stubble at the end of June, early July at 4kg per
hectare. He used two knock downs and 1 litre of Treflan prior
to sowing. Post sowing, Richard uses 80mls of Talstar, and grass select if
necessary.
- Richard grazes flairdale
strategically with stud ewe lambing, ewe hoggets, as well as
preparation of sale rams. Growing out merino lambs prior to going onto a
feed lot to be finished before being sold is part of the plan.
All this despite a rainfall of 350 to 400mm/year on average with 25% falling during the summer.
- The long term rotation is only 4 to 6 years of lucerne and then 3 years of crops. The lucerne is
grown on all soil types from white sand to heavy red soils at Boloroo Stud.
